As a kid I worked at my dad’s grocery market and one of my jobs was restocking shelves. That’s how I was first introduced the delicate ameretti cookies wrapped in bright wrappers and packed into colorful tins. Legend has it that they were invented by a young Italian baker in the 18th century for the Cardinal of Milan. I learned how to make them from a woman named Carmella while I was working at her son’s pizzeria on South Street in Philadelphia. They go great with a shot of espresso, a scoop of gelato or even afternoon tea.

I'm a native of the California Bay Area transplanted to the East Coast. Every time I visit home, even on weekend trips, I have to drive up to San Francisco to pick up a bag of 10 homemade marshmallows (self-moderation...I could eat 50 in one sitting, I'm sure).

On my most recent trip home, I picked up a chocolate nib bar for my boyfriend (in addition to my marshmallows, of course) as a thank you gift--he had brought me marshmallows the last time he visited the Ferry Building. But the bar fell out of my backpack somehow and was left behind in an overhead storage compartment. Despite numerous calls and e-mails to JetBlue, I never heard back. Perhaps it was never found...or perhaps they ate it themselves!
