In-house dragee panning is a specialty of Recchiuti in which we take nuts and fruit and thinly coat them with chocolate. The number of chocolate layers a confection received is driven by balancing equal parts of the fruit or nut to the chocolate. Recchiuti is truly a magnificent chocolatier, with piles of simply amazing treats at their fingertips. The Dragee Sampler is a great starting spot to pick your favorites, or, if you like them all, to pick up a nice blend. I do like them all, but definitely some more than others. • Cherries Two Ways: ✭✭✭½ These are a blend of sweet and tart, with two different chocolate coatings. The consistency of the dried cherries is lovely, but to be honest these are too sweet for me. • Burnt Caramel Almonds: ✭✭✭½ A rather nice chocolate-covered almond, with a bit of a caramel flavor. However, unlike the hazelnuts, below, the burnt caramel adds nothing to the texture for some reason, making these very similar to a normal chocolate-covered almond. Fine, if you like them. • Burnt Caramel Hazelnuts: ✭✭✭✭✭ This is more like it. The burnt caramel here adds a little bit of a crunch beyond that of just the hazelnut, and the taste of the nut is delicate enough that the burnt caramel also shines through a lot more than with the almonds. I can't help but gobble these down as soon as I get them. • Peanut Butter Pearls: ✭✭✭✭✭ + ✭! These are in my top two chocolates from any chocolatier anywhere, and I've tried dozens! And all of my other top ten are dark chocolate, so even if you are a dark chocolate fiend, don't discount the possibility of these light/dark little wonders. They are not meant to be chewed and swallowed, so don't do that. Instead, take just one, and let it melt in your mouth. Taste the rich milk chocolate alternating with the dark, perfectly balancing the peanut butter, and that little hint of salt. By the time you find the little crunchy bit (puffed rice, perhaps?) in the center, you'll be hooked. Unlike all of the other chocolates in this collection, I can make a 5-ounce box of these last a week, sitting open on my work desk. Each tiny pearl is so unreasonably satisfying. Like I say, buy a box of these. Then decide which ones you like and order them individually.
The Dragee Sampler is a compilation of yummy treats, and should be available in a larger size. It's just too hard to stop! Of course, I could buy two next time!

I gave the Dragee Sampler to my girlfriend for her birthday. She and her husband absolutely loved it! My friend said it was “addictive.” They had to put it away, otherwise it would have been consumed in one sitting!

I met Michael Recchiuti when he was just starting out at the SF Farmer's Market on the Embarcadero some 25+ years ago. Recently my husband bought me one of the big boxes for Mother's day. I ate these chocolates over a few weeks and realized just how subtle and balanced these beautiful creations are. There were pieces I didn't think I'd like and was so surprised at really enjoying the pieces infused with tea and herbs. Michael Resshiuti is a superb chocolate maker. SF is lucky to have such an artisan. I've eaten a lot of chocolate all over the world - there isn't much that better than his.

Love the chocolates but hated the packaging. I think the chocolates and fruit pate should've been vacuum sealed. When I got home, the package was waiting for me by the door. However, it had lots of ants outside and inside the box. Majority of them inside the fruit pate box.
