The Story Behind Our SF Icons

An exploration of our imaginative collaboration with Creativity Explored

The story of San Francisco non-profit Creativity Explored dates back to 1983, when artist / psychologist couple Florence and Eliza Katz founded three organizations in the Bay Area in response to the diminishing availability of resources for disabled people.

Their goal: to provide neurodivergent artists with the materials they needed to express themselves, and to share the artwork with a larger audience of those who would appreciate it. Among the thousands of new fans they gathered in the decades that followed was another artistically inclined Bay Area couple, Michael and Jacky Recchiuti.

Throughout the years, designs from Creativity Explored artists made their way onto a few different Recchiuti boxes, usually atop the classic Burnt Caramel piece. While most collaborations were exclusive, limited time offers, in 2017 Recchuiti welcomed the first official full time collaboration, the eight piece SF Icons box. The designs are taken from a run of paintings made by Isaac Haney Owens.

“Isaac’s work spoke for itself – the bright, joyful primary colors and the iconic images represents the love we feel for our city, it’s the epitome of the reason we started our chocolate business here, Issac’s art visualized the specialness of San Francisco.” - Jacky Recchiuti

Artwork from a variety of Creativity Explored artists adorn the walls of the Recchiuti office space in the Dogpatch, and have come to define one of Recchiuti’s most iconic boxes, introducing both brands to locals and tourists alike.
